Rubb is changing the landscape at Rockford International Airport. Twin hangars – each 300ft wide by 300ft long – loom over the airfield and the surrounding Midwestern prairie.

These hangars have the capacity to house the largest commercial aircraft in operation, including Airbus 380 and Boeing 787.

Greater Rockford Airport is leasing the structures to an MRO (Maintenance, Refurbishment, Overhaul) contractor who will perform heavy maintenance on commercial aircraft, starting in summer 2016. Air traffic at Rockford Airport – just 80 minutes from downtown Chicago – is increasing, and these hangars, which can handle large aircraft or multiple smaller aircraft, pave the way for future growth in traffic and high-tech jobs in the Greater Rockford area.

Rubb began construction on the first of two hangars in September 2015. Rubb teamed up on site with Area Erectors; working steadily through the hard northern winter, to complete steel assembly in March 2016.

The steel structures are designed, manufactured and constructed to accommodate full snow and windloads at this location. Featuring two 300ft span widths, the twin structure’s weight comes in at more than 1000 tons. The roof cladding is Rubb’s patented Thermofabric – which provides insulation and protection for the aircraft and operations inside the hangars. Main doors are by Megadoor, each door featuring an opening width of 285ft. The doors are clad with translucent PVC which allows natural light into the hangars.

Rubb’s fast delivery of the Rockford aircraft hangars demonstrates the scalability of the Thermohall concept – which is ideal for permanent and relocatable hangars of any size. There has been a significant increase in investment in the aviation sector, and the positive experience and results of this challenging and successful project bodes well for future hangar projects worldwide.
